Gold Molly -
Mollienisia velifera
Dimensions: P.velifera 15-18 cm. P.latipinna 10-12 cm long., P.sphenops 6-10 cm. (the size refers to the females, which themselves are bigger).
Origin: Southern United States and Mexico, Colombia P.sphenops up. This species is very adaptable and are found in a variety of aquatic environments from freshwater, brackish and even marine: lakes, ponds, lakes and water courses.
Origin of specimens raised: The first appearance of molly in Europe dates from 1899. In the early years of the last century, these fish begin to be bred in Florida. In the distant 1909, the variety which is still the most popular, the "Black Molly" comes to aquariums in the world in 1930. After the great wars breeders selected variety "Sailfin (sailing) and" Lyretail "(queue lira). Today the main production centers of La Florida are molly and Singapore, there are virtually no trade in wild individuals, and these alone can be achieved in breeding for improving the breed.
What remains: the molly ideal aquarium guests are mixed, with good capacity, with a water hardness of medium-high (15-20 ° DGH and more PH7 ,5-8), a portion of sea salt in order of 3-5 g / l, this being essential especially in the initial phase of acclimation: it strengthens the brackish water fish and makes them less vulnerable to disease. It is recommended for tanks between 80-120 liters capacity. It is important to have a broad space for swimming, while the presence of vegetation has to be abundant.
The diet is vegetarian. In nature, especially feed on algae attached to rocks and small invertebrates such as insect larvae (mosquitoes) and crustaceans. Aquariums in the food base should be a good supplement with vitamins for tropical fish, delivered in small portions throughout the day and can be integrated to algae or cooked vegetables (watercress, spinach, etc.).. Adult males are very aggressive among themselves, especially in the presence of females, the molly is rather peaceful and tolerant of other fish.
How are reproduced: the continuous playing Molly in his short life (3-4 years on average), from the 4th to 5th month of life. The number of offspring depends largely on the size of females: the younger ones generally do not stop more than 15-20 fry at a time, after the first six the number may reach 60-80 fry at a time. The young are born with less than a centimeter and are calved at a distance of 4 to 6 weeks. The females can be isolated in a farrowing quarters.
Curiosity: The similarity between the three species, is an attraction for the aquarium and among them are smooth, such ease of hybridization is always operated from the breeders, with a result that now available in several shops in the same name. Thus, the morphological distinction between P. latipinna and P. velifera based on the number of rays of the spine (14 in the first, 4-5 over the second).
