Early 50's Blackguard Telecaster Corse Knurled Heavy Solid Brass Chrome Plated Control Knob with Slotted Set ScrewYou know, I find this ironic - between 1950 and 1954 the knobs that Fender used on guitars varied in pattern and shape quite a bit. Many don't realize that, but you can look at 15 different vintage knob examples from that era and find 6 or so slightly different heights and knurl patterns, as well as variations in the roundover top section. Those who've read Nacho's book or visited the Blackguard website, as well as frustrated collectors looking for matching knobs, know this all too well. There are dozens of different Telecaster knobs on eBay and available from various manufacturers online. Why is it that, with all the variation in the early 50's knobs that Fender used, NONE of the existing knobs out there get everything right to ANY of those various options of accuracy? It's incredibly frustrating to those who need vintage replacements or those who find the knobs to make or break a build in looks and feel. Glendale, up until now, has done the best job, and my hat's off to them for it, but the top is too flat for an early 50's Fender and too round for a late 50's Fender. Why put such effort into something that isn't absolutely dead-on perfect?
What I did with these knobs is go back to my reference photos from repairs and find the knurl pattern, overall height, set screw location, and roundover shape that was the
most common
among 1950-1954 Fender guitars and have my knobs hand-made, here in the USA, in a machine shop that still uses old vertical lathes and understands details,
exactly
to those specs. This way, those looking to replace a vintage knob on an early Fender guitar will have the best chance of matching the original with my replacement replica knobs. Similarly, builders of high-end replicas will be able to use a knob that will be truly vintage-accurate and represent what most knobs from that era actually look and feel like.
These are solid bell brass and heavy! They are chrome plated using old electroplating methods that may not be as perfect as modern methods but have a truly authentic look to the resulting product. The set screws are heat-treated steel and won't strip.
These knobs are a labor of love. If there was a truly accurate version already in existence, I wouldn't have wasted my time and money on creating these. If you want the best and
only truly accurate
option for your Blackguard or replica, there's simply no other option. Perhaps, if these sell in enough quantity, I can eventually reduce the price. Until then, they are expensive because they cost me a fair amount to have made in such a way in modest quantities by hand.
Price is for a single knob.
