Delicious. No garden is complete without Brussel Sprouts. Long Island is a wonderful heirloom variety with good old-fashioned taste and prolific production of sprouts.
Brussels sprouts are a leafy green vegetable belonging to the brassica family The leaves are dark green, or redish purple in some varieties, have a rounded shape and grow in whorls up the stem. The edible portion of the plant is the sprouts. They grow on the stalk of the plant, in the leaf axils (between each set of leaves), maturing from the base of the stem 1st and continue up the stem. Once picked from the stalk no further sprout will grow from that position. Although the taste of different varieties vary somewhat, good home grown brussel sprouts have a sweet nutty flavor.  Introduced in the 1890s. Once the most important commercial sprout variety in the US. Compact 24" plants yield 50-100 dark green 1½" sprouts over an extended period. 80-115 days from transplant.
Seeds can be sown directly into garden when soil is warm or started in containers and transplanted when several inches tall.
    Zones 3-10
All seeds are packaged and for the current growing season.

We are a small family run seed processor that has a long tradition of farming for many generations. I fondly remember my Grandfather telling stories about his Grandfather tilling the earth and the events that impacted his success. The stories bring to life the courage and creativity required to survive capricious weather and market prices. Our history makes it clear that the rewards of farming, including the birthing of the calves, the bounty of a good harvest, and the family's feeling of being rooted in the soil. I still remember with pride, getting to sit on my Grandfathers lap while driving the tractor for the first time during corn harvest.
In addition to commercial crops, most family farms also have large gardens to grow much of the food consumed on a farm. Growing your own vegetables, flowers, spices and herbs, canning and freezing were a normal part of life on the farm. We always saved seed from each plant for starting the cycle for the next year. We would like the opportunity to share some of these seeds with you.
