Liberty Seated Dime Stars on Obverse (1838-1853) (1856-1860)
In 1838 Stars Were added to the Obverse of the Seated Dime bringing it in line with the other Seated Liberty Coins at the time representing the 13 Original Colonies that formed the United States. The Pattern would persist until 1853 when the weight was adjusted from 2.67 grams to 2.49 grams to compensate for the changing ratio of value between gold and silver. Arrows were added to delineate the change in size from 1853-1855 then the Second Design was resumed with the smaller size from 1856-1860.
Liberty Seated Dime with Arrows (1853-1855) (1873-1874)
The Third type in the Liberty Seated Series the Variety Placed arrows around the Date to indicate the reduction of Silver in the coin Due to the Ratio of Gold to Silver Changing at the time. The Weight was reduced from 2.67 grams to 2.49 grams. The Design was Discontinued in favor of the Previous design with the new weight the following year until 1873 when the Arrows design returned for a Fifth Type that saw a slight increase in weight from 2.49 grams to 2.5 grams.
